Calculators

The grade sevens will need calculators for their current math unit.  Not all students have one.  I would like to have this issue resolved by early next week.

Dental Screening

On Tuesday, November 26, the Ministry of Health will be conducting dental screenings for grade 1 and 7 students.  This information is used to develop preventative program services based on need.  For statistical purposes, they need students' Personal Health Services Numbers.  Please complete and return the form that was sent home last week.  If yours got lost, please contact me soon, so that I can get you another copy.

Student Safety

As staff at St. Dominic School we are committed to the safety and well-being of our students. Each year we revisit our practices to offer the best environment. Please note after our last CSCC meeting we have some changes to our practices for open and closed doors during the school day.

  1. The front door to the school on Dieppe St. will be open all day from 7:30 – 4pm.
  2. The two back doors facing the playground will be open at 8:10 am, closed at 9am, opened for parents at 11:40am, closed again after lunch and reopen at 3:10pm for parents.
  3. We ask students arriving late to school to use the front door and report to the office.
  4. All visitors including parents/guardians must enter through the front doors and report to the office before proceeding to a classroom during class time.
  5. We ask parents or guardians who are on school grounds to please let a staff member know you are here. Our staff members are wearing orange vests while on supervision.
  6. Please call the school if your child is sick or away for the day.
  7. Unless students go home for lunch they are expected to stay on the school grounds unless under special circumstances a signed note by a parent is provided to classroom teacher.
  8. Students are expected to arrive no earlier than 8:30am unless a coach has requested an early practice.
  9. Supervision outside will occur at 8:35 am unless wind chill temperatures or conditions encourage indoor recess. Indoor supervision will begin at 8:30am.
  10. Please complete emergency forms at start of year and contact the office for changes to phone numbers occurring during the year.
  11. Following dismissal at noon hour or at the end of the day we ask that students do the following:
    1. Walk with a friend or group of friends
    2. Go directly home or to child care provider
    3. Be aware of their surroundings and who is nearby
  12. Please contact the school if you have any questions.
Yours in Education

Math Review

With the Grade 7 math test coming up next week, some of you might be looking for review materials.  They are available through the "Math Makes Sense Extra Practice" link at the bottom of this page.  Each of the review sheets corresponds to a lesson from the unit (our in-class review also clearly identifies each lesson) and the answers are included at the end of the review sheets.

While I wouldn't suggest that students do ALL of the review sheets, they would be advised to target the specific areas that are most challenging.

Welcome!

Just a note to keep you up to date with what is going on in our 6/7 class…

Academic stuff:

Math:
The grade sixes are working with Mr. McCormick.  His blog can be found at http://mrimccormick.blogspot.ca
The grade sevens have recently started the “Patterns and Relations” unit. There will be a test on the first unit’s material near the beginning of October.  (Check the calendar for the exact date, as it approaches.)  In preparation for the test, students are encouraged to review the lessons, particularly the Assessment Focus questions.  This should give them insight as to their areas of strength and weakness.  Additional review materials can be found on CD-ROM available for loan from the school.  I would also strongly recommend signing up for the materials available through our division (I will include the information on the blog within the next few days).
There are links to various math sites linked to this blog and the St. Dominic website if you are looking for additional resources.  Many of them are actually fun!

Language Arts:
We are currently working on a unit called “Fears and Phobias”.  Students are reading from the Nelson Literacy anthology.  Two of the important ideas in this unit include summarizing and word choice.

Social Studies:
We have begun the “Location” unit.  We are familiarizing ourselves with maps and atlases, and will, in October, have an open-atlas a quiz.  When we are comfortable in this capacity, we will be exploring globalization and global/international organizations.
We will also be working on monthly current events, with the information going out in the first week of the month, the assignment due in the third, and the quiz in the last week.

Science:
Students are working with Ms. Feschuk this year.  A link to her blog will be posted when it becomes available.

Health:
We will be starting the Fully Alive program.  Please see the previous post for parent letters and other information.

Religion:
Unit 1 “I…We” is our current unit.  We are exploring the themes
                                                Who am I?
                                                Am I normal?
                                                Do I belong?

Finally…

It is probably wise to subscribe to this blog.  Subscribing through the RSS link seems to send updates immediately, the email subscription has been known to be a little delayed...

Please take a minute to email me with your name and your child’s name, so that I can add you to my contact list.  This is probably the most efficient method of communication for most things, though phone calls will work better for some things too…

Meet the teacher night is Thursday, in conjunction with a barbecue and the Community Council AGM.  Hope to see you there!

Swim Day

Just a few reminders for Wednesday's Swim Day:

- Buses leave at 10:00AM, following the assembly.
- Hot dogs and watermelon will be provided.  Students are responsible for drinks.
- Sunflower seeds are NOT permitted.
- Sunscreen is essential and a hat is recommended.

Any students leaving with their parents MUST check in with the classroom teacher.

Progress reports will be handed out when we return to school.  If you require that your child's progress report be mailed, please leave a self-addressed, stamped envelope at the office.  I'm pretty sure that there is a way to check progress reports online, but I have no idea how it is done.  I will post instructions if this is indeed still possible.

Grade Eight Farewell

Grade 6/7 families:

To assist the grade eights with their farewell activities, the grade six/seven students have been asked to supply the snack for the farewell tea on Tuesday, June 25th

It is a busy time of year for all of us so please choose one or more of the options listed to below to support the St. Dominic grade 8 students.

  1.  Bring 2 dozen squares, dainties, cookies, etc.  to the school servery by 9:00 AM Tuesday, June 25th, in a state in which it could be served.  Preferably a disposable plate.

  1.  Donate $5 per family and return to Mr. Gallays by Wednesday June 19th.  The room parents will then go out and purchase baking.

  1. Volunteer a portion of time on Tuesday June 25th between 4:30 and 7:00 to make coffee and set out the treats.

Please email, text or call with your preference for supporting the grade 8’s by Wednesday June 19th.  Thank you in advance for your support.  It is greatly appreciated.

The Saskatoon Public Library's summer reading program has begun.  Details can be found at your local branch, or by going to http://www.saskatoonlibrary.ca/wedareyou

Summer reading is essential to students' continued success.  This may provide additional motivation for reluctant readers.  Please consider participating.

Humour Unit in Language Arts

Because of the nature of the Humour Unit, students who miss class will find themselves behind with their viewing/listening/reading response entries.  I will try to upload as many of these items as is practical, as well as assignments throughout the unit.  They are found in the "Humour" file in the Shared Documents or by clicking here.

Treaties Test

Our "Treaties" test in Social Studies will be this Thursday.  It will focus on the similarities and differences between the worldviews of First Nations people and the British newcomers. Information can be found in the "Social Studies" folder in "Shared Documents" or be clicking here.  (Hopefully!)
